Happy New Year!
I know, I know, it’s almost three weeks late with this blog post and I’m finally getting into the swing of things.
My first post of 2016 would have been a lot sooner. Unfortunately, my region (Aberdeenshire) was affected heavily by severe flooding caused by constant rainfall which contributed to a massive increase in water in the River Don. The street I live on runs alongside that river and although we have flood defences, with the sheer volume of water, it managed to find a way around the levy.
Apparently in the forty years since the houses were built this is the first time this has happened. Unfortunately, the village I live in wasn’t the only one affected, many towns and villages in the surrounding area were also hit. Quite a number of people had to be evacuated from their homes.
I was extremely lucky, although the water level was up a few inches over my front and back door before it finally receded, only a small amount of water managed to enter my home. My office and kitchen were the only rooms in any way affected. I am pleased that my office floor has now dried and that I could return my PC from upstairs.
Roughly seventeen of my neighbours have been severely affected and some have had to move out of their homes until the damaged can be repaired.
The community spirit has been fabulous, it has been wonderful to watch people coming together to help one another.
